The name
We called it Courageous for a reason.
Courageous Building and Construction was founded on three principles: integrity, quality and audacity.
The first two are what every contractor claims. The third is the one that actually distinguishes us — the willingness to challenge how this industry conventionally operates.
It takes a certain audacity to charge for an estimate when everyone else advertises them free, and to explain honestly why. It takes some to tell a client their budget and their plans do not currently meet, at the first visit, rather than discovering it together at framing. And it takes rather more to commit to zero-emission jobsite practice in residential construction years before anyone is requiring it.
Courage, for us, is not a marketing word. It is what it costs to be straight with people in a trade where being straight is not always the easiest way to win the job.

Honesty and transparency, including when it costs us the job. That means a written scope you can hold us to, change orders priced before the work rather than after, and an honest answer when the truthful one is “you do not need this yet”. We would rather lose a sale than win one on a misunderstanding.

Your house, your money, your decision. We bring the technical judgement and the options; you make the call, with enough information to make it well. That also means working properly alongside your architect, engineer, designer or insurer rather than treating them as obstacles.

For the crew and for the household. Fall protection and safe working at height are non-negotiable, and so is the domestic side of safety — dust containment, secured tools, protected walkways and a site left safe every evening for children and pets who live there.

Claims are cheap in this industry. These are all things you can test at the first meeting.
Ask for the scope in writing
Before you pay anything. If a contractor will not put the scope on paper, the number they quoted is not a price — it is an opening position.
Ask who is actually on site
Ask who manages the job day to day and whether the trades are employed or subcontracted. Ask us the same. You should get a straight answer.
Ask about the last job that went wrong
Every builder has one. The answer tells you far more than a portfolio does. We will tell you about ours, and put you in touch with the client.
Ask for licence and insurance
Then actually check it. Maryland requires home improvement contractors to be registered, and a certificate of insurance takes one email to verify.

We provide our licence details and current certificate of insurance with every contract — and before you sign, if you ask. We would encourage you to ask this of every contractor bidding your work, not just us.

It is the clearest expression of what we mean by audacity — committing to a harder standard, in advance of the regulation, because it is the right direction and because it makes the experience of having us in your home demonstrably better.
